HOPE
As I mentioned before my main role with the Alliance was
to set up a Children’s Alliance.
With that in mind I decided I wanted to start a project in which
all children of the world could participate.
March 12 2003, My simple idea - HOPE, Hand of Peace projects:
HOPE Hands of Peace Exchange, where children around the world can
simply make two handprints on A4 sheets of paper using pencil, pen,
paints, crayons anything they like - even wet earth. They can write
a peace message on the paper or turn them into works of art. Putting
their name age and country on them, they then send them to the Peace
Embassy where we will exchange one handprint for another of a child
from somewhere else in the world. The second print we retain as part
of a collection.
HOPE Hands of Peace Exhibition, this is where I take rolls of newsprint
around the world and add the prints of children from different countries,
the schools involved in this part of the HOPE project connect with
another school giving them a more personal connection and long term
interaction.
Living in Cairns at the time, I had looked for a school I felt was
doing things a bit differently. I found Djarragun Indigenous College
at Gordonvale. Here on March 17 and 18 less then a week after coming
up with the idea, I took handprints of 250 students.
March 26 through the efforts of Senators Natasha Stott-Despoja and
Andrew Bartlett (Australian Democrats), a motion of support for the
HOPE projects passed through the Australian Senate.
Things were unfolding at a fast pace first with the poem then the
alliance and now the HOPE projects had Senate approval within 14
days of concept. This was snowballing. It was well and truly time
to move One Mind One Voice and the Global Children’s Alliance
out of my tiny bedroom–cum-office!
Then an invitation arrived!
